Discover Life in Jackson

Jackson, Mississippi was incorporated in 1821 and named after President Andrew Jackson. The city was originally chosen as the seat of the Mississippi government because of its beautiful and healthy setting, as well as its importance as a trading post. It remained primarily a civic center until it gained prominence, and an important position along the railway, during the Civil War. Following the war, Jackson asserted its place as a cultural and historical landmark. It’s the home of authors Richard Wright and Eudora Welty. It’s also the last stop on the legendary Freedom Rides that were an important part of the Civil Rights Movement.

Jackson’s geography is as unique as its history. It’s the only city in the US that sits on top of an extinct volcano. In addition to its history and geography, Jackson is a cultural center that boasts an opera, a botanical garden, a zoo, a symphony, and numerous museums.
