Discover Life in Little Rock
Little Rock derives its name from a small rock formation on the
Arkansas River bank that became a landmark for travelers on the river.
Although it was settled as a trading post in 1722, it didn’t become an
official city 1831. It roared to prominence during the Civil Rights
Movement, and returned to importance after the election of President
Bill Clinton, a former Arkansas governor and Little Rock resident.
Today, Little Rock is the home of the Clinton Library, the Heifer
International charity, and Dillard’s department stores. It’s also the
site of two large universities and two small private colleges. In
addition to its important place in Arkansas history and education, it’s
also the cultural center of Arkansas, boasting a ballet, symphony,
theater, and arts center.
