Discover Life in Johnson City
Johnson City began as nothing more than a railroad depot called
“Johnson Depot.” However, towns often formed around railroad depots,
and Johnson City was no different. It quickly became a railroad hub for
three lines and was incorporated it 1869. More than its role in the
growth of the region, Johnson City is known for its musical history and
sometime resident Al Capone. It was the site of legendary jazz recording
sessions in 1928 that shot Fiddlin’ Charlie Bowman to fame. For his part,
Al Capone supposedly used it as a bootleg distribution point during Prohibition.
Today, Johnson City is a vibrant community featuring numerous museums,
a blues festival that celebrates their bootleg heritage, and a large
shopping mall. Johnson City isn’t a huge town, but it’s large enough for
the happy residents who call it home.
