The Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD), strives to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all. As a consequence of guaranteeing FHA loans to lenders, HUD ends up owning homes across the country and is committed to assuring that those homes are made livable and available for purchase by owner-occupant and investor buyers as soon as possible.

HUD contracts with a network of asset managers throughout the country who, in turn, contract with local brokers to list and sell these properties.
