God’s Country – Murray County Georgia
Thoughts from a Local
I'll never forget the first time I heard the term "God's Country."
I was working as a nurse in Murray County and I heard a coworker welcome
someone to the area by saying, "Welcome to Murray County, you're in
God's Country now." I had lived in and around Murray County my whole
life and never thought of it quite like this. Later I was reminded of
these words and realized they were true.
One day after a stressful morning at work, I was driving around on my
lunch hour trying to clear my mind. I turned onto Tom Terry Road; a road
I was not expecting would turn my day around. As I came around the curve,
I saw one of the most beautiful views I had ever seen, a view that took my
breath and all my stress away. I was reminded of those words,
"You're in God's Country now."
One of my favorite places in Murray County is Hickey Gap, known as a
campground being part of the Chattahoochee National Forest. It's not the
camping that I love about Hickey Gap, but the waterfall that waits down
stream. If you visit Hickey Gap, you'll want to travel the unnamed
trail down the river. The trail is narrow, but well beaten enough to
follow. As you come to the top of the waterfall, look to your right.
You'll see the old rugged rope tied from tree to tree that will guide
you straight down to the base. At the base of the waterfall is your
own nature made swimming pool, but make sure you go on a hot day because
the water is ice cold. And if it’s too cold for a swim, take a swing on
the rope that hangs from a tree growing beside the waterfall.
Fort Mountain State Park is also a great place to visit in Murray County.
Fort Mountain is named for the 855 foot rock wall that stands at the highest
point of the mountain. The wall is believed to be built by the Indians, but
many stories surround the wall. Fort Mountain Park contains:
- 3712 acres
- 17 acre lake
- Swimming beach
- Hiking trails
- Camp sites
- Cottages
