Nashville Farmers Markets: Eat Fresh, Eat Local
Thoughts from a Local
Information about the Farmers Market & Friends of the Farmers Market
I moved to Nashville in the summer of 1999. Having shopped at green
markets and farmers markets in other cities I immediately sought out what
Nashville had to offer in the way of fresh food, locally produced.
I was so excited to find the fresh produce, honey, jams, and other
condiments from the surrounding areas. The local honey helped with my
allergies and the food was cheaper and fresher than any supermarket. It
was also a good way to meet people and connect with those who grow and
raise your food. The Flea Market on the weekends is also a fun shopping
experience, selling everything from antiques to clothing and household
furnishings.
The Mission of the Friends of the Nashville Farmers' Market is to
provide development and support for the Nashville Farmers' Market to
enhance the Markets role as a civic resource and to accomplish the
following long-term goals:
- Improve the availability of a diverse range of affordable quality
foods to all Nashville-area citizens.
- Connect and promote local and regional producers and farmers to
chefs, restaurateurs, food organizations and all members of the
Nashville community.
- Support small Tennessee and regional family farmers.
- Promote a healthier community through education and marketing to
foster an appreciation for local, fresh and sustainable raised produce
and products.
By providing volunteer assistance to farmers and the Markets education
and marketing initiatives, the FNFM will help promote healthy eating and
food education in the entire community. The FNFM will also coordinate its
efforts with other community organizations in outreach activities in
Middle Tennessee and beyond.
