Celebrating the Past while Looking Into the Future

When Nashville's Union Station building was completed in 1900, the builders topped the central tower with the figure of Mercury, the Roman God of speed, change and progress. Who would have imagined this figure to be more than an embellishment to the structure, but a predictor of the future of Nashville as a major capital city?

In the early 1900's, the annexations of suburban areas and commerce and industry expansion, Nashville's population grew quickly. In the 1930's, a large percentage of that population began tuning in to WSM Radio's new program, the "Grand Ole Opry." A film bearing the same title in 1939 signaled acceptance of country music on a widespread level and served as insurance on Nashville's position in it's continued development.

The motto of Nashville's Bicentennial Celebration, "Celebrating the Past while Looking Into the Future", is as valid today as it was in 1900 at Union Station. With expansion and renewal of downtown, the acquisition of the Tennessee Titans professional football team and the constant strides toward positive change all around, Music City USA continues to be a source of pride and progress for Tennesseans past, present and future.
