5 Tips for Dealing With the Emotional Effects of Home Selling

Many homeowners have an emotional attachment to their homes, and when it's time to sell, those emotions can sometimes hinder the process. Your home is where you've spent time with family and friends, celebrated holidays and special events, and created memories to last a lifetime. We understand it can be hard to let that go, which is why we wanted to share these five tips on dealing with the emotional impact of selling your home.

1. Remember that "home" is more than a house

It's a tale as old as time, but home really is where the heart is. Take a step back and consider that, although you've made many memories in your home, there are many more to be made elsewhere. New opportunities are on the horizon for you.

2. Change your mindset from an owner to a seller

Once you start thinking of yourself as a home seller instead of a homeowner, you'll be able to focus more on what needs to be done to make this sale happen. If you can come to terms with letting go of your home, your attitude towards the selling process will become more positive, and you'll become more productive.

3. Depersonalize as soon as possible

Depersonalizing your home is very important. Buyers should step into your home and be able to picture it as their own. This means you should take down any family photos, collectables that are on display and any other personal items.

One of the hardest parts of selling a home can be depersonalizing it, especially if your emotions are getting the best of you. Again, your home is more than just this house. These items that you're putting away won't be gone forever.

4. Focus on the future

Think about why you are selling your home to begin with. Are you moving closer to family? Are you downsizing to help save money? List out the reasons you have made the decision to sell, and whenever you're feeling down about the move, look back at this list. Remember that you are moving on to a new chapter in life, and you have many things to look forward to. Focus on the future and the positive events to come.

5. Find an understanding, trustworthy agent

Finding a Realtor who you can trust on an emotional and financial level is so important. This person will be your go-to for information, advice and much more. They will market your home, negotiate for your best interest and be your guide through the entire selling process. If you can trust your Realtor with the sale of your home, that will take some of the emotional stress off of your shoulders and allow you to focus on your next chapter.
